Barack Obama Internet Marketing Campaign

Postby ConradJohnson on Mon Nov 10, 2008 4:02 am

So I'm trying my best to dissect the Obama internet marketing campaign. It's been reported that they spent millions online from their huge coffers. I'd really like to get a breakdown of everything that they did seeing as how incredibly effective it was for them to disseminate information, raise funds and reach so many people online, all with the discipline of always staying on message.

It's also been said that this internet channel will also be used to also get popular opinion for legislation that he wants to get accomplished.

Whether you're blue, red or somewhere in the middle,...if you're an internet geek like me (which I suspect you are as you're here) you gotta admit...not bad at all.

So I'll start with the basics and let others add to the list as we go.

main website: www.barakobama.com
vertical - my.barakobama.com which is the social networking portion of it. Don't know how many users it has but if anyone can find that information.
Blog on barakobama.com

Facebook: www.facebook.com/barackobama (over 3 million users)
this deserves it's own study here as there's even micro niche groups setup there as well like: Pacific Islanders for Barak Obama.

Twitter: twitter.com/BarackObama 125,419 followers, but here's an interesting thing, the account is also following 129k users itself which would definitely make me think I'm part of the movement if BO was following my posts.
Here's a faux sample exchange (me: just finished some sweet code for a website and launched. barak: just got elected president of the greatest country on earth and am working on solving the energy crisis and peace in the middle east... oh and the economy).

Myspace.com - http://www.myspace.com/barackobama - almost 875k friends (not including Tom).

youtube.com - http://www.youtube.com/barackobama - 133k subscribers.

Flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/barackobamadotcom

wouldn't be surprised if there were social networking sites' accounts that were commonly used in other countries like orkut and .... FOUND: http://www.bebo.com/Profile.jsp?MemberId=5364079912 - bebo account - 6,338 members.

actually this deserves it's own study also, international social networking sites used to push message also to rest of world. Doesn't have to be english:

Paid banner campaign. - www.cnn.com always on there. I think the guy rented out the entire site. Need more examples for this.

That's enough for now. Fellow geeks, hit me up with some more information so we can really dissect this incredible example of internet marketing.

Email campaign is said to have had about 6 million users with local information tied to each email (say a voter precinct.) Here's an example of how they were collecting this email database once he got the nomination at the DNC. They started with the DNC email database for the election and added to it from there.

CJ, thanks for tracking all of this stuff... it's fantastic information. By 2012 you can sell the e-book to the Republicans. :1:

The Internet also let people repeatedly listen to the candidates’ own words in the face of attacks, Mr. Huffington said. As Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s incendiary words kept surfacing, people could re-watch Mr. Obama’s speech on race. To date, 6.7 million people have watched the 37-minute speech on YouTube.
